Split rail cedar fences have been around for hundreds of years and
while the old adage that "fences make good neighbors" may hold true for some
folks. It is more likely that they are far better suited for containment of
livestock or to enhance the
natural beauty of the landscape. Split rail fences may be the only fencing that
does not look alien or imposing on a landscape. Split Rail Fence can
be made from a number of trees, but the most common is either Eastern Aromatic
Cedar or Western Red Cedar. We must also say that the longevity of western cedar in the southeast
is marginal as compared to eastern aromatic cedar.
In some cases where federal
restoration grants, National Historic Society
monies, or Museum Restoration funds are in effect,
split rail fences are required where they
previously existed. Required or not split rail do seem to add an aesthetic aura. Brief 19
on this site will give you a tremendous insight into what is needed, in terms of
the stringency of these types of funds..
